My (not-so) American Life

My blog of my trip from Charlotte, North Carolina to Dakar, Senegal, my year spent there, and back again.

First impression: not cool. When you step off the plane it's like entering a barren place, but it was 4 in the morning, or midnight in Charlotte. But maybe that's too far back. Let me start at the beginning of September 6...
Last Minute Preparations:
Mom woke us up at about 5. We were frantically running around making sure nothing had been left behind. Getting dressed, brushing hair, finding Sam, all the usual last minute stuff. Mom gave me my birthday present, a green purse, (a lovely shade of green, I might add,) and some mechanical pencils. I had another present, but because of the stupid liquid rule, I couldn't get it yet. Our friend, Ali, came to pick us up with our 20-something bags in his big truck. After we were sure we had everything, we packed all the bags in the truck, or rather the men did, and then loaded up. We drove to the Charlotte Airport.

The Charlotte Airport:
As we arrived we unpacked the bags from the truck, said bye to Ali, and Daddy went to go park the car. I waited outside with our twenty-something bags while Mom brought them in. (Those outside check-ins would come in handy right about now! But NO, we have to bring them all INSIDE!) I was watching the laptop bags because, according to my mom, someone could walk by and pick them up. After everything was inside we all sat down and waited for my dad. We then realized that Maryam forgot our breakfast of PopTarts in the truck! Argh!! After he came, Mom and Dad went to look for the check in we should use. They found one... all the way at the end we were farthest from. Ugh! So I had to drag two heavy bags, and my two carry-ons all the way over there, then I had to put them on the scale, and luckily they passed even though they were a few pounds overweight. We were able to check them all the way to Dakar so we wouldn't have to pick them up when we got to JFK. Lovely. After we got all the bags checked we went through security. I did see several signs mentioning the banned liquid rule. Oh... and since WHEN have they made you take your shoes off for x-ray? So dumb. Well that went well, but it took a while cause Mom had to get the homeopathic meds hand checked. After that was done we went to the gate. Our flight wasn't supposed to leave for like an hour, so Daddy and I went to Cinabon cause it was my birthday (I feel so special. I'm 12 at last! Sorry Cara and Beth!) So we ate and then we had to put those little yellow tags on the cases cause they weren't going to fit in the overhead compartment. I said good-bye to Charlotte, :'-( and stepped into the gangway.

The Charlotte to JFK plane trip:
Uneventful. Soda. Snacks. Two hours of boredom. Too lazy to open my bag. I listened to my iPod but that's it
